ADR 2025 Edition: Ensuring Safe International Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road

The Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) 2025 edition is the essential guide for increasing the safety of transporting hazardous materials by road. This vital document has been regularly updated since its inception to establish comprehensive international requirements and procedures for the training and safety obligations of all participants involved.

Why the ADR 2025 Edition is Crucial:
As a key regulatory framework, the ADR helps reduce the risk of protectionism by authorizing the international transport of dangerous goods by road, provided all agreement provisions are respected. This is especially significant post-Brexit, as the United Kingdom continues to adhere to ADR requirements. The ADR 2025 edition incorporates the latest changes effective from 1 January 2025, ensuring you stay compliant with the newest regulations.

What’s new with the ADR 2025:

  • Enhanced Documentation Requirements: Starting July 2025, vehicles carrying dangerous goods must have the relevant documents stored in the driver’s cab. This update ensures that essential safety information is readily accessible to drivers, as opposed to being attached to packages, which was common under previous regulations
  • Mandatory Training for Limited Quantities (LQ) Transport: The new regulations require drivers involved in transporting dangerous goods in limited quantities (LQ) to possess a training certificate. This closes a previous gap where training was not strictly enforced for LQ transport crews
  • Introduction of 11 New UN Numbers: With advancements in technology, especially around batteries and fire suppressants, the 2025 ADR regulations will include 11 new UN numbers. These cover everything from lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries to fire-suppressant devices
  • New Packaging Instructions for Sodium-Ion Batteries: As the use of sodium-ion batteries expands, the ADR introduces specific packing instructions and new UN numbers, ensuring the safe transport of these materials
  • Expanded State of Charge Restrictions for Lithium-Ion Batteries:The regulation limiting the state of charge for lithium-ion batteries (UN 3480) to 30% will now include batteries packed with equipment and vehicles powered by them. This change will be phased in, becoming mandatory by January 2026

The ADR 2025 edition provides comprehensive guidelines and standards for the safe and efficient transport of dangerous goods by road, making it indispensable for transport companies, regulatory bodies, and safety officers. By adhering to the ADR, you ensure that your operations meet international safety standards and contribute to safer road transport of hazardous materials.
